The UK has a rich history and a long tradition of protecting our heritage. This means that there are places all around the country where you can enjoy beautiful architecture and learn about our storied past.
You do not need to travel far to explore these places, either, as there are many in the local area.
Here are three of the best historic homes to visit in Cheshire.
1. Tatton Park
Tatton Park in Knutsford is a large estate with a historic mansion nestled in more than 50 acres of carefully landscaped gardens.
The mansion was the home of the Egerton family throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and during this time, they built an impressive collection of period furniture, paintings, and books. Much of their legacy is preserved in the mansion, which is very well-maintained, so you can gain an insight into the lives of the Egerton family and the history of the time.
Beyond the house itself, you can explore the impressive gardens. The area has evolved over the course of generations and now contains various areas, including a walled kitchen garden, historic glasshouses, pleasure gardens, and a 100-year-old Japanese garden. You can even take a guided tour of the Japanese garden for a truly special experience.
The wider grounds also contain a working farm you can visit and a medieval old hall, which has been standing for more than 500 years. You can find all manner of wildlife on the woodland walks in the surrounding parkland, too.
Throughout the year, Tatton Park hosts countless events, including art exhibitions, guided tours, sporting events, craft workshops, and vintage car shows, so there is something for everyone.
2. Lyme Park
At 1,400 acres, Lyme Park is the largest estate in Cheshire. You might recognise the exterior and surrounding gardens from the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, but the house had a long history before appearing on TV.
The impressive mansion, sitting on the edge of the Peak District, was the ancestral home of the Legh family from 1398 all the way until 1947, when it was eventually gifted to the National Trust.
After being granted to the family by King Richard II, Lyme Park was originally a hunting estate. It was shaped by each subsequent generation, reflecting the trends of the time. The resultant property gives an insight into the many periods of history it has lived through, as additions were made at several points.
The estate is also home to many important historical artefacts, including paintings, tapestries, and the rare Sarum Missal. This handwritten book was first created in 1487 and remained in the possession of the Legh family until it was purchased by the National Trust in 2008.
As well as the rich history of the house, the grounds of Lyme Park offer plenty of woodland and moorland to explore, and you may even catch a glimpse of the red deer or Highland cattle that inhabit the area.

3. Little Moreton Hall
Little Moreton Hall is one of the most unique historical buildings in the area. This timber-framed Tudor property was built more than 500 years ago. Since then, the foundations of the building have shifted, creating a surprising interior with sloped walls and floors.
The Moreton family first started building the property in 1504, but it took more than 100 years to be finished in its current form. Now, it serves as a time capsule, letting you step into life in the Tudor era.
This is an excellent historic house to visit with the family, who might enjoy being immersed in the era and meeting the costumed living history team to learn what life would have been like.
The surrounding moat and kitchen gardens are the ideal spot for an afternoon stroll and some wildlife spotting. You will also find a quaint tearoom where you can stop for a nice lunch after your visit.
While Little Moreton Hall might not be as grand as the other historic buildings on this list, it still makes for an excellent day out.
